Largest One-Day Volunteer Waterway Cleanup Sets Sight on Kiawah
Join the community on Kiawah Island on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9-11 a.m. for the largest one-day volunteer waterway cleanup event in South Carolina. The 3rd Annual Plastic-Free Waters Kiawah Island Sweep is led by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and SC Aquarium, leading the beach cleanup every year in an effort for coastal cleanup. Meet at The Sandcastle to join sweep partners, gather supplies, and sign up for your sweep location. This volunteer opportunity is open to anyone; you do not have to be a Kiawah Island resident to volunteer.
In addition to the annual Plastic-Free Kiawah Sweep, the Kiawah Conservancy and SC Aquarium committed to monthly litter sweeps that have resulted in nearly 9,000 pounds of debris being removed and documented in just the first six months this year. These monthly efforts and annual sweeps mitigate plastic pollution impacts across the state of South Carolina.
