OwlVenture Camp - A Kiawah Cares Program

Angel Oak Elementary School OwlVenture Camp

Kiawah Cares is proud to be partnering with the OwlVenture Camp, a supplementary learning camp founded in 2016 in order to help combat “summer learning loss” for students at Angel Oak Elementary School.

What is summer learning loss?

Over the summer months, students typically lose one month up to one year of learning. In foundational subjects like reading and math, this can be devastating for future learning and readiness.

Our primary objective has always been to demonstrate through test scores, that at least 80% of the students complete the program with skill levels in reading and math at or above the prior semester level, thereby minimizing the "summer learning loss"

Allen Reed, the program’s founder, works year-round to coordinate the OwlVenture Camp, which is funded through Kiawah Cares. Make a donation to Kiawah Cares that will go directly to support OwlVenture at the link below.

Our Progress

The Summer Program has more than doubled in size in the eight years since inception, so we are reaching more students. Given Angel Oak’s steady improvement in overall reading and math competency scores, we believe the Summer Program has been a significant contributor to the improvements at Angel Oak Elementary. Based on the SC Dept of Education MAP Test scores from Fall of 2016 to Fall of 2023 for students in grades 3-5, Angel Oak has moved from the 25th percentile to the 59th percentile in Reading and from the 24th to the 50th percentile in Math.

The annual objective of the program has always been to eliminate the “Summer Learning Loss”, which is defined as at least 80% of the students scoring at or above their prior Spring Semester test level on the Reading and Math MAP test scores. This year the program set a new record as 95% of the students achieved this goal.
