Kiawah Cares Gives 3 Local Families Clean Drinking Water
The Kiawah Cares Foundation has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Van Every Foundation to be used to supply 3 families with clean drinking water through the Sea Islands Water Wellness Mission, a Sea Island Hunger Awareness Foundation program.
The Water Wellness Mission assists residents on Johns and Wadmalaw islands who do not have access to clean water. Wadmalaw and parts of Johns Island have no public water, so residents must have a well and septic system. A new well and septic system cost roughly $6,000 to install, leaving many residents to use contaminated water from an old well. Some may make the choice to buy bottled water for drinking and cooking, others borrow water from their neighbors, while some continue to live without clean water putting them at a high risk for health issues.
The Water Wellness Mission has now installed 254 new wells for families on Wadmalaw and Johns islands, positively impacting the lives of 635 people. With 29 families on the waiting list for clean water, this $20,000 grant allows sufficient funding to serve generations of families with clean water.
Kiawah Cares is proud to partner with the Van Every Foundation, Sea Island Hunger Awareness Foundation, and Water Wellness Mission to fulfill this fundamental human need in our neighboring communities.
