Frierson Elementary Partners Up with Clemson University
Kiawah Cares has partnered with Clemson University's Community Build Architecture Studio V and donor couple Sig and Anna Weiler, to design, build, and fund an outdoor learning pavilion at Frierson Elementary School. The new outdoor classroom will allow a hands-on learning experience for students in math and science. This structure will be part of the school’s learning garden, a hands-on way for students to learn.
Senior Architecture majors and Master’s Degree candidates at Clemson University designed four models of possible pavilions and then made their way over to Wadmalaw Island to present them to the fourth and fifth graders at Frierson. The students, in turn, presented their own drawings to the Clemson students and professor. It was a great exercise for both groups of students!
A final design will be determined on April 1, 2022 and the Clemson students will construct the pavilion by May 1, 2022. The building will feature tables, seating, teaching boards, electricity for chrome books, storage for garden tools, a sink, and possibly a roof that can be moved side to side to account for movement of the sun (the students' favorite feature). Imagine all the learning that will take place in this great outdoor environment!
